Word Notes

A Home for Word Nerds

Word Nerds began more than ten years ago as an idea for a small creative writing agency.

At the time, we imagined offering copywriting, editing, proofreading, research, and ghostwriting. The work behind that idea was varied: proofreading ebooks for a major ecommerce company, creating advertising copy for a dumpster rental business, researching startups for a venture capital firm, and writing and editing articles for a credit card website.

There wasn't an obvious thread connecting all of it—except words.

Words are how we explain things, sell things, remember things, hide things, and occasionally understand one another. They can be useful, beautiful, funny, frustrating, or all four at once. Word Nerds grew from an affection for the people who notice them.

Today, Word Nerds is becoming something different: a destination for writers, readers, puzzle people, and logophiles.

We're building free writing tools, word finders, puzzles, games, and small experiments with language. Some are practical. Some are playful. The best ones will be both. We want to make things that help you find the word you need, solve a puzzle, sharpen your writing, learn something unexpected, or simply enjoy language for a few minutes.

We also publish Word Notes—our blog about words, language, writing, dictionaries, and word games. This is where we'll share what we learn, explore peculiar corners of language, and explain the thinking behind the things we make.

Artificial intelligence is one of the tools we use to build Word Nerds. We believe in being direct about that. AI can help us research possibilities, write code, test ideas, and turn a rough concept into a working tool more quickly. But Word Nerds is created by humans, for humans. People choose what belongs here, how it should work, what it should say, and whether it is worth sharing.

As Word Nerds grows, we'll experiment with ways to make it sustainable. That may eventually include advertising or optional paid features. But we want the heart of the site—a useful and welcoming place for people who love words—to remain open to everyone.

The internet has no shortage of disposable content. We want to build something worth returning to: a growing collection of thoughtful tools, curious games, and good words.

That is the purpose of Word Nerds.

We're glad you found us.
